ISO 10007:2017 5.3.1: Product structure or service capability and selection of configuration items

The configuration items chosen, and how they relate, should reflect the product structure or the service capability. Items should be picked using set criteria, choosing entities that allow their functional and physical characteristics to be controlled on their own while still achieving end-use performance overall; the criteria should take account of the configuration's life cycle, legal and regulatory requirements, criticality for risk and safety, new or changed technology, design or development, the interfaces an item has with others, the conditions of procurement, and support and service. The count of items should be set so that the product or service can best be controlled, selection should begin as early in the life cycle as possible, and the choice should be revisited as the product or service develops.
