Duration estimates for activities should come from the people responsible for those activities. Estimates drawn from past experience should be checked for accuracy and for fit with current conditions, and inputs should be documented so they can be traced to where they came from. Gathering resource estimates alongside duration estimates is useful for resource planning (6.1.2). Where estimating durations involves significant uncertainty, the risks deserve evaluation, documentation and reduction, and an allowance for the risks that remain built into the estimates. The customer or another stakeholder should take part in estimating durations when this is required or appropriate.
