Monitoring and measurement processes should establish how objective evidence of conformity is gathered. Some customers ask only for a monitoring and measurement plan, often called an inspection and test plan, as their basis for checking conformity with specified requirements. The plan should specify: which process and output monitoring and measurements are applied; at which stages; the characteristics monitored and measured at each stage; the acceptance criteria; any statistical process control methods; where inspections or tests are to be witnessed or carried out by interested parties, for example a test or set of tests aimed at approving a design by showing it can satisfy the product and service specification (type tests), testing on site including acceptance, and verification and validation of the product and service; where, when and how the organization plans to use external providers to carry out inspections or tests; and the criteria for releasing products, services and other outputs. ISO/TR 10017 gives guidance on choosing statistical methods.
