The closing CSM is the profit not yet recognised because it relates to service still to be given. For contracts without direct participation features, it is the opening CSM adjusted for new contracts added, interest accreted at the B72(b) locked-in rates, future-service changes in fulfilment cash flows under B96 to B100 (unless an increase exceeds the CSM and creates a loss, or a decrease is taken up by a loss component), currency differences, and the amount released as revenue by spreading the CSM over current and remaining coverage using coverage units (B119). For direct participation contracts, the CSM is instead adjusted for movements in the fair value of what the entity is entitled to from the underlying items and for future-service changes in fulfilment cash flows under B101 to B118, in each case unless the B115 risk-mitigation option applies or a loss arises or reverses, and also for new contracts, currency and the coverage-unit release; these adjustments may be made as one combined amount. Where CSM changes do not offset changes in fulfilment cash flows, income and expenses are recognised under paragraph 41.
