Where appropriate, a control plan spans three stages. The prototype stage sets out the dimensional, material and performance tests run while prototypes are built, and a prototype plan is needed when the customer asks for one. The pre-launch stage sets out the same kinds of tests after prototyping and ahead of full production. The production stage records the product and process characteristics, the process controls, the tests and the measurement systems in use once volume manufacture runs. Plans are set up per part number; a family plan may serve similar parts made on a shared process; and each plan flows from the quality plan. Suppliers should be required to satisfy this Annex, plans for bulk materials may refer to batch formulation details, and under Sanctioned Interpretation 24 a highly automated process whose control method lives in a system such as an MES may hold summary control information that references or links directly to that system.
