Clause 7: Support – IATF 16949:2016 - Quality Management System for Automotive Production

IATF 16949:2016 - Quality Management System for Automotive Production 7.2.3: 7.2.3 Internal auditor competency

A documented process confirms that internal auditors are competent, with customer-specific requirements taken into account, and a list of qualified internal auditors is kept. Auditors of the QMS, of manufacturing processes and of products each show that they understand: the automotive process approach and the risk-based thinking within it; the customer-specific requirements that apply; the ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 requirements within the audit scope; the core tool requirements within scope; and how to plan and carry out an audit, write its report and close its findings. Manufacturing process auditors additionally show technical understanding of the processes they audit, including PFMEA and the control plan, and product auditors show competence in product requirements and in using measuring and test equipment to check conformity. Where training is used to build competence, the trainers' competence is documented. Auditors keep their competence by carrying out a set minimum number of audits each year and by staying current with internal and external changes. As revised: SI 4 (October 2017, revised August 2020): minimum competencies are set out separately for QMS, manufacturing process and product auditors; trainer competence is documented where the organization's own staff give the training; items f) and g) are confirmed as requirements.
