How footage is preserved must also be necessary: a black-box set-up that deletes automatically after a storage period and is opened only after an incident may be needed in some cases; in others live monitoring without recording is enough, and security staff who can intervene may replace cameras. The choice follows the purpose (real-time viewing does not preserve evidence) and data minimisation, bearing in mind that constant live viewing can be more intrusive than an unwatched recorder.
