Rule 8.4 lists what counts as professional misconduct: breaching the rules or trying to, helping or prompting someone else to breach them, or breaching them through another person's acts; a criminal act that reflects on the lawyer's honesty, trustworthiness or general fitness; dishonest, fraudulent or deceitful conduct and misrepresentation; conduct that prejudices the administration of justice; claiming or hinting at an improper ability to sway an agency or official, or to get results by means the rules or the law forbid; knowingly helping a judge break the judicial conduct rules or the law; and, in Connecticut, practice-related conduct that the lawyer knows, or ought to know, is harassment or discrimination on any listed ground (race, colour, ancestry, sex, pregnancy, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, veteran status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or marital status). The discrimination paragraph leaves untouched the lawyer's freedom to take, refuse or leave a matter and to advise and advocate within the rules.
