The producer considers at all times how primary production activities affect food safety and suitability, identifies points where contamination is especially likely and takes measures to reduce or remove it. As far as practicable the producer controls contamination from soil, water, feed, fertilisers (natural ones included), pesticides, veterinary drugs and other agents; shields food sources from faecal matter, zoonotic agents and other contaminants; manages plant and animal health so it does not threaten human health or product suitability (for example by keeping to withholding periods for veterinary drugs and pesticides and keeping records where applicable); and handles waste and stores harmful substances properly.
