Section 8: Primary production – Codex General Principles of Food Hygiene (CXC 1-1969, Rev. 2022)

Codex General Principles of Food Hygiene (CXC 1-1969, Rev. 2022) 8.1: 8.1 Environmental control in primary production

Sources of environmental contamination are identified, and primary production is not carried on where contaminants would reach unacceptable levels in food (polluted land, facilities giving off toxic or offensive odours that could taint food, water sources polluted by industrial wastewater or by runoff carrying faecal material or chemical residues) unless a measure is in place to reduce or prevent contamination. Where necessary this includes assessing the suitability of water used for irrigation, rinsing and similar activities.
