Where a law requires a document, record or information to be retained, electronic retention satisfies it only if the information stays accessible and retrievable for later use, is kept in the format in which it was created, sent or received or in a format that shows its accuracy, and is kept so that the origin and destination of a communication and the date and time it was sent or received can be identified. Information whose sole purpose is to send or receive messages is excluded. The companion rule for original form (Article 8) asks for a reliable means of showing the information is complete and that it is easily retrievable.
