Quality Improvement Standard 2 Clinical indicators – Australia RACGP Standards for After-hours and Medical Deputising Services (5th edition)

Australia RACGP Standards for After-hours and Medical Deputising Services (5th edition) QI2.2: Safe and quality use of medicines: patients are told the purpose, importance, benefits and risks of their medicines and treatments and made aware of their own role, and medicines, samples and consumables are acquired, stored, administered, supplied and disposed of as manufacturers and the law require, including stock carried in vehicles and doctor's bags

What does QI2.2 require?

Medicines given at night in the home need the same discipline as in a pharmacy. Prescribers explain to patients what a medicine is for, why it matters, its benefits and risks, and what the patient must do, such as how to take it, what to watch for and when to see their regular GP. Medicines the service holds, including starter packs, emergency drugs, vaccines and Schedule 8 and 4D medicines, are obtained from legitimate suppliers, stored at the right temperature and security whether at base or in a vehicle or bag, administered and supplied under State or Territory law with records of what was given to whom, tracked for expiry and disposed of safely.
