Before any structural changes that will affect how GMOs are contained in the facility, the applicant (the certification holder) must ask the Regulator in writing either (a) to suspend the certification or (b) to vary the certified area so dealings can carry on in a part the changes do not touch. The note gives as an example a variation to partition the facility temporarily, keeping GMOs contained at one end while the other is altered, with a further variation needed afterwards to bring the removed area back into the certification.
