This item applies only where a planned dealing will use GM micro-organisms. Where the facility falls short of AS/NZS 2243.3, it must be assessed whether the water supply needs backflow prevention; the guideline suggests weighing the hazards of the GMOs to be used, any cross-connections, devices or systems that could contaminate a supply linked directly or indirectly to the water service, and how likely a backflow event is. If prevention is needed, measures suited to the risks of the planned GMOs must be put in place, and records showing the assessment and any measures must be retained, and made available to the Regulator on request. The guideline notes that AS/NZS 3500.1 covers protecting potable water and selecting and installing backflow devices.
