Occupants of a Class 1 building must receive automatic warning when smoke is detected, with an efficacy above 0.95 and a reliability above 0.95, so that they can evacuate to a place of safety suited to the building's use, the occupants, the fire load and combustion characteristics, the potential fire intensity and the fire hazard. Deemed-to-Satisfy route: H3D6, smoke alarms and evacuation lighting to Housing Provisions Part 9.5, treating a Class 10a private garage above or below the Class 1 building as part of it. Part 9.5 sets different smoke alarm requirements for Class 1a and Class 1b buildings, including evacuation lighting in Class 1b.
