Section 4: How to consult with workers – Australia Model Code of Practice: Work Health and Safety Consultation, Cooperation and Coordination

Australia Model Code of Practice: Work Health and Safety Consultation, Cooperation and Coordination 4.1: 4.1 Use varied, practical consultation methods and adapt for remote and fly-in, fly-out workforces

Examples of ongoing consultation include paid pre-start briefings, regular team meetings, talking to workers on the floor, an open-door policy, toolbox talks, and staff updates and emails. Effective consultation may also require staggering times for different shifts, dedicated time for non-urgent issues, surveys and feedback forms including anonymous ones, focused meetings for workers who do specific tasks, culturally appropriate approaches with translation and interpretation, and mixing arrangements for different workers, for example structured committees for full-time staff and toolbox talks for on-hire workers. For fly-in, fly-out, drive-in, drive-out, remote and multi-site workers, pre-start and de-brief meetings between shifts, accessible representatives, consultation on accommodation and facilities, consultation on psychosocial hazards from extended time away, virtual meeting tools and consultation before departure and on return may be needed. Unexpected matters may use regular channels or a one-off meeting.
