Where there are risks from work at height, emergency procedures must be established and first aid equipment provided; typical fall injuries include unconsciousness, blocked airway, impalement, serious head or abdominal injuries, fractures and suspension intolerance. A PCBU that provides a fall arrest system as a control must establish emergency and rescue procedures, test them to ensure they are effective, and provide workers with suitable and adequate information, training and instruction on them (WHS Regulations r 80). Develop them for the different emergency and rescue scenarios the risk assessment identifies, and fold them into the workplace emergency plan. Consider the location (remote or isolated, access, distance to medical care, whether rescue can be immediate without emergency services), communications, rescue equipment kept close to the work (for example a rapid response kit with man-made fibre rope to AS 4142.3), rescuers' training, fitness and ability to use equipment, whether procedures have been tested, first aid, and how and how quickly local emergency services will respond if relied on.
