Section 6: Keeping records – Australia Model Code of Practice: How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks

Australia Model Code of Practice: How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks 6: 6 Keep records of the risk management process

Records show how the duty holder complied with the WHS Act and Regulations, support later reviews, show how decisions about controls were made, help target training, provide a basis for safe work procedures, allow review after legal or business change, and demonstrate to regulators, investors, shareholders and customers that risks are being managed. Useful records cover identified hazards, assessed risks and chosen controls (including checklists and worksheets), how and when controls were implemented, monitored and reviewed, who was consulted, training records and plans for change. The Regulations impose retention periods for some hazards such as hazardous chemicals and plant, and everyone should know what records exist and where.
