Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry 3.9c: 3.9 Identify and control equipment risks

Identify hazards by observing how work is done and what equipment is used, talking to workers, HSRs, manufacturers and suppliers, and reviewing manufacturer instructions, records and incident reports. Consider suitability (is it used for its purpose and has it been modified), location and its effect on layout and worker access, abnormal conditions, misuse and fluctuations, and every activity in the life of the equipment from installation to dismantling. Controls: substitute the hazard (replace castors or improve handles on trolleys), isolate (screens to reduce radiation from X-ray and MRI), engineering controls such as guarding, administrative controls such as tag-out to isolate equipment during maintenance and cleaning and operator training, PPE such as lead-lined aprons and protective eyewear, and combinations. In the mobile workstation case, wrist injuries in nurses and added psychosocial strain traced to incorrect set-up and use contrary to instructions led the hospital to redesign work so nurses rotated to shared ergonomic static workstations for administrative work.
