Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry 3.9b: 3.9 Control radiation risks from medical imaging and treatment equipment

Machines that use radiation for medical purposes pose risks to workers, and all Australian jurisdictions set annual limits for occupational exposure. Key controls: rotating workers through tasks to keep exposure as low as possible, avoiding exposure for pregnant or breastfeeding workers, monitoring worker health including regular health monitoring, using dosimeters with systems and training that stop multiple workers sharing one, appropriate PPE including lead-lined aprons, trained workers, controlled access to radiology areas and signage warning of areas where radiation exposure may occur. Manage risks in line with the national radiation protection code for medical exposure.
