Section 3.8: Slips, trips and falls – Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry

Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry 3.8a: 3.8 Prevent slips, trips and falls through design, surfaces, lighting and housekeeping

Slips, trips and falls are one of the largest causes of injury in the industry, often on the same level and on stairs and ramps, with serious injuries. Workers are sometimes blamed when the cause is how work is organised or an unsafe environment, so reduce risk through good work design, good maintenance and systems of work that avoid rushing and shortcuts. Slips come from insufficient traction with wet or dry contaminants; trips from objects such as medical equipment cords, loose mats, carpet tiles and level changes; falls at level from loss of balance or missed steps, and injury can occur even with no fall. Common hazards include rushing, carrying loads that obstruct vision, uneven steps and paths, damaged floors, wet or oily floors, obstructions, inappropriate footwear, poor lighting and leaf litter or moss. The PCBU must eliminate or minimise risk as far as reasonably practicable. When selecting floor coverings consider foot traffic, grip when dry and wet, the work done (carpet grips but may resist pushing beds and trolleys) and how the floor is cleaned, since some cleaning methods build up residue that reduces grip. Inspect and maintain floors, treat surfaces for slip resistance, differentiate levels with contrasting colours, avoid carpet in clinical areas and avoid unsecured carpets or mats. Provide lighting for movement and work including emergency lighting. Housekeeping systems should find and fix leaks, clean spills promptly, keep walkways clear, store materials safely, remove waste promptly and train workers to cooperate, with professional cleaning considered.
