Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry 3.3c: 3.3 Control psychosocial risk through the work environment, tools and work design

Example controls: rotate staff so there are breaks from traumatic or upsetting exposure including administrative work away from patients, limit overtime and extra shifts, and consider how hazards combine, for instance more support where high demands cannot be reduced. In the physical environment, locate storerooms and equipment near use with walkways suited to equipment; provide spaces for concentration, private difficult conversations and retreat after emotional situations; ensure good visibility and lighting; provide a safe retreat during aggression, separate worker facilities, staff-only access control and good lines of sight to avoid isolation. For tools and equipment, provide systems that reduce human error and mental load and exposure to distressing content, scheduling software that prevents harmful schedules, accessible and sufficient equipment, and maintained and tested duress alarms and call buttons. For design and management of work, match resources to the task considering leave, rest, expertise, peaks, unplanned tasks, retention and patient needs; reduce daily workload through scheduling, planning, delegation and prioritisation; redesign tasks when skills are scarce; review workloads and worker-to-patient ratios; increase breaks after trauma; share information on patients who present known risks; increase autonomy and flexibility including for emotional demands; reduce frustration and uncertainty; address power imbalances and low diversity; provide accessible, anonymous and confidential reporting without retaliation; and provide post-trauma support and health monitoring.
