Australia Model Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks 2.2c: 2.2 Recognise whole-body and hand-arm vibration

Whole body vibration reaches the body through a supporting surface such as a vehicle seat or floor in heavy vehicles or machinery and may cause lower back pain, degeneration of lumbar vertebrae and disc herniation, as with heavy earthmoving machinery or driving over rough terrain. Hand-arm vibration passes through a vibrating tool, steering wheel or machine controls to the hand and arm and can disrupt circulation and damage nerves and tendons, contributing to vibration-induced white finger and carpal tunnel syndrome, and is worsened by the grip needed to hold vibrating tools and by repetitive shock loads. Examples include impact wrenches, chainsaws, jackhammers, grinders, drills, compacting plates and needle guns.
