For referrals written on or after 1 July 2025 the referral must be in writing (electronic is acceptable), signed and dated, show the referring practitioner's name and practice address or provider number and the referral date, and explain the reasons for referral with the information the treating practitioner needs; a service on a lost, stolen or destroyed referral uses the words 'lost referral' in place of the particulars. There is no emergency exception for allied health referrals, and they cannot be indefinite. MBS Online states M10 referrals run for the period stated or 18 months from the first service; section 12(7) of the Determination names only Groups M3, M9 and M11 for that rule.
