Australia FPA Australia Fire Protection Accreditation Scheme NSW (1 July 2020 edition) 3.5: Fire Systems Design entry requirements: satisfy the Schedule 2 knowledge and skills criteria for each category (legislative framework including the EP&A Act and Regulation, the BCA and the relevant standards, approval processes, identifying design requirements, solving technical design issues, preparing detailed designs and documentation), proven by written assessment; hold the Schedule 2 (transitional) or Schedule 6 (qualified) experience evidenced by project documentation for every category sought; view the online FPAS information video; and pass a three-part assessment on legislation and codes, practical application and the Australian Standards for the category, plus a separate assessment on each jurisdiction's building approval framework

What does 3.5 require?

To be accredited in a design category the applicant must meet the knowledge and skill requirements in Schedule 2 for that category, which FPA Australia tests by written assessment: knowing and applying the legislative framework including the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and Regulation 2000, the BCA and the relevant Australian Standards, understanding fire system design approval processes, defining project scope and system requirements, interpreting legislation, codes and a fire safety engineer's requirements for performance solutions, reading design drawings, identifying and solving technical design issues, planning layouts and preparing detailed designs and documentation. The applicant must also have the experience Schedule 2 specifies for transitional accreditation or Schedule 6 for qualified accreditation, shown through project information and documentation in the application, for every category applied for. Before sitting the assessment the applicant watches the online FPAS information video covering the need for accreditation, the role and work activities, the assessment process, sample questions and FPA Australia's expectations. The assessment has three parts, Part A legislation and codes, Part B practical application and Part C locating and applying the Australian Standards relevant to the category, and a separate assessment is sat for the building design and approval framework of each jurisdiction in which endorsement is sought.
