The organization decides what knowledge is needed to run its processes and to achieve conforming products and services, keeps that knowledge up and makes it available where needed. When needs and trends change, it looks at what it already knows and works out how to gain or reach the extra knowledge required. Notes explain that such knowledge comes largely from experience, and may come from inside (intellectual property, lessons learned, results of improvement work) or from outside, for example from standards, universities, conferences and what customers or providers know.
