Platform floors are laid over joists before walls are framed (not recommended as the finished polished surface); fitted floors are laid after the building is closed in, kept clear of wall plates with a gap; wide floors need intermediate expansion joints in addition to perimeter gaps. The 2021 edition revised Section 5 to remove ambiguity and give quieter, more robust floors, so the predecessor's gap and width values are not asserted here.
