Stumps, posts, piers and similar under the floor are designed for vertical gravity loads using the procedure: determine dead and live loads (floor systems by weight, walls at 0.4 kPa over the floor area, sheet roofs 0.4 kPa and tiled 0.9 kPa, floor live load 1.5 kPa, decks over 1.0 m at 3.0 kPa unless over 40 square metres, plus snow above 0.2 kPa in alpine areas), combine them, and size the footing from the table or the allowable bearing pressure. It applies to site classes A, S, M and H with at least 100 kPa bearing, classified to AS 2870; E and P sites need professional advice.
