People and teams make the premises of their claims explicit, make the inferences from them explicit, and craft conclusions that others can test with logic and data independent of the claimant, instead of keeping premises private and testing claims only with their own logic. Argyris shows professionals whose defensive reasoning blamed clients and managers, gave no data others could check, and disguised the implications of their conclusions; he argues that human-behaviour issues deserve the same data-driven analysis as any management discipline, and that commitment and motivation cannot overcome defensive reasoning.
