APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including Independence Standards) 110: Apply the five fundamental principles

What does 110 require?

Every Member must act with integrity, with objectivity, with competence and due care, with confidentiality, and with professional behaviour. Integrity includes refusing to be associated with reports or communications the Member believes are materially false or misleading, and showing enough strength of character to do the right thing under pressure. Objectivity means not compromising judgement because of bias, conflict of interest or undue influence, including from technology. Competence requires maintaining knowledge at the level a client or employer needs and supervising those who work under the Member. Confidentiality forbids disclosure or personal use of information obtained through professional relationships, subject to the Australian exception in AUST R114.3 where a duty or right under law or professional rules exists, where the client authorises it or a specific legal requirement. Professional behaviour requires compliance with law and avoidance of conduct that discredits the profession, including dishonest marketing.
