Begin by examining exposure to violence from outside and inside, given the kind of organization and its industry, and look at each relationship and each possible conflict that might end in violence at its sites or around its activities, including staff past and present, clients, suppliers, contract workers and others acting for it, friends, relatives and intimate partners, visitors and guests, and people opposed to its mission or goals. Weigh other exposure factors too, such as: work at night; lone or remote work; location in a high-crime area; handling cash or valuable goods; opening to the public; serving or selling alcohol or other intoxicants; unhappy employees who have already shown concerning behavior; contact with people who have medical or psychological problems; high-risk healthcare settings; and current or upcoming events or conditions likely to raise tension, stress or conflict among employees.
