World Bank Group General EHS Guidelines approach: General approach to the management of EHS issues

A project or facility builds EHS into corporate and facility business processes through an organised hierarchy. It identifies EHS hazards and risks as early as possible, including in site selection, product design, capital requests, work orders, modifications and layout changes; involves competent EHS professionals to prepare project-specific plans and procedures; understands the likelihood and magnitude of risks from the nature of activities and proximity of people and resources; prioritises strategies that prevent irreversible or significant harm; prefers eliminating the cause at the source; adds engineering and management controls where avoidance is not feasible; prepares workers and nearby communities to respond to accidents with resources to control events and restore conditions; and improves performance through monitoring and accountability.
