When AI is used for clinical purposes the acceptable use conditions tighten. Staff use only AI systems that a relevant clinical governance body has approved, that were designed for the clinical purpose in question and trained on suitable clinical data representative of the Western Australian population. They implement the clinical safety and quality policies and guidelines that apply, including processes for disclosing AI use to patients and obtaining informed consent. They understand the specific risks of the system and the use case, mitigate them including by using the system only under the right conditions, continually monitor for errors or bias, and report performance issues for investigation. The final decision, whether a diagnosis, a recommended treatment or confirmation of a consultation record produced by a scribing tool, is made by a qualified clinician who carefully reviews the output before confirming it.
