The employer must eliminate the MSD risk as far as reasonably practicable. If it cannot, it must lessen the risk as far as reasonably practicable by changing the layout of the workplace, its environment (heat, cold and vibration included) or the systems of work; changing the things handled; using mechanical aids; or a mix of these. Any remaining risk must then be lessened through information, instruction or training, and training may be the sole or main control only where none of those measures is reasonably practicable. In choosing controls the employer must consider postures, movements, forces, the duration and frequency of the handling, and environmental conditions (heat, cold, vibration) acting directly on the worker. Consultation with employees and the HSR applies.
