US Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations (42 CFR Part 493) 1419-1457: The clinical consultant is available to advise the laboratory's clients on the appropriateness of tests ordered and the interpretation of results, and ensures reports carry the information needed for patient-specific interpretation and that consultation on result quality and interpretation is communicated to clients

What does 1419-1457 require?

For both moderate and high complexity testing the clinical consultant provides consultation on the appropriateness of the testing ordered and the interpretation of results. The consultant must be available to give clinical consultation to the laboratory's clients, be available to help clients ensure that the tests ordered meet the clinical expectations, ensure that reports of results include the pertinent information required for specific patient interpretation, and ensure that consultation on the quality of the results reported and their interpretation for specific patient conditions is available and communicated to clients.
