Limitation periods do not run against the proprietor of a registered estate (section 96); instead a squatter in adverse possession for ten years may apply to be registered under Schedule 6, the registrar must notify the proprietor and others, and the application is rejected if any of them objects unless one of the three conditions in paragraph 5 applies (estoppel, other entitlement, or reasonable mistake about a boundary), with a further application possible after two more years of possession if the proprietor takes no steps. A defendant to possession proceedings has the defences in section 98. Proprietors who receive a Schedule 6 notice must respond within the period the rules fix or lose the title.
