Speech Pathology Australia Code of Ethics (2020) 1.3: 1.3 Professional responsibilities

The speech pathologist listens to, respects, learns from and collaborates with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; promotes achievable, equitable health, wellbeing, communication and education outcomes; co-designs services with clients and communities; provides responsive, respectful services that acknowledge cultural and linguistic diversity; uses culturally and linguistically suitable resources and, where none exist, develops them with the community; deals with others honestly, fairly, respectfully and in good faith; and identifies and acts on reasonable concerns about a colleague's competence or conduct. When managing, supervising or employing others they: treat them fairly and free of discrimination, bullying or harassment; fully inform them of the terms of the relationship; inform and involve them in decisions; respect and meet their industrial and professional entitlements, pay included, under employment and work health and safety law; give regular, fair, constructive feedback and access to development; tell them of their employment rights; use a fair process in disputes; give them equitable access to resources; and expressly recognise their contributions to practice, teaching, research or administration. They take responsibility for those they manage, supervise or employ, model and discuss ethical practice to build their ethical reasoning, and take reasonable steps so that they and those people have a suitable supervisor, understand and apply the Code, practise competently, can develop professional identity, integrity and ethics, are supported to reflect on practice and conduct, and get professional development and support when needed. In developing the profession they share clinical knowledge and research, develop their own ethical practice and help others do so, take part in clinical education and supervision of university and work-experience students, and create and support research opportunities.
