15.1: Digital infrastructure and government data centres – South Africa National Policy on Data and Cloud (2024)

South Africa National Policy on Data and Cloud (2024) 15.1.6: Data centres comply with siting, environmental, certification, uptime and self-supply requirements

What does 15.1.6 require?

Every data centre in South Africa is built and operated in line with environmental legislation and building by-laws; is kept out of restricted areas (heritage sites, national key points, land set aside for land reform); is kept away from places prone to natural disaster or social unrest; shows every prospective customer certification credentials that can be verified; where used by government, follows a fault-tolerant design providing a minimum uptime of 99.995 percent; and gives priority to self-provision of electricity and water so operations continue and dependence on the national grids falls.
