Conduct of the test: what the commissioning organisation must ensure is governed – PTES

PTES PTES-3.1: Keep intelligence gathering within scope and the rules of engagement

Where the test includes reconnaissance or open-source intelligence gathering, the organisation ensures it stays within the agreed scope and rules of engagement: the effort is set to an agreed depth appropriate to the time and goals, additional domains, businesses or assets discovered are brought back to the scope decision rather than acted on unilaterally, and the intelligence effort stays focused on the agreed critical assets. This leaf governs that the activity is bounded and authorised; it does not prescribe technique.
