Required signs and symbols are visible whenever work is being done and are removed or covered promptly once the hazard is gone. Danger signs are reserved for immediate hazards and caution signs for potential hazards or unsafe practices, both following either ANSI Z35.1-1968 or Z535.2-2011 (danger: red upper panel, black borders, white lower panel; caution: yellow background, black upper panel with yellow lettering, black lettering for other wording), with colors per ANSI Z53.1-1967 or Z535.1-2006 (R2011). Exit signs, where required, have legible red letters at least 6 inches high with strokes at least 3/4 inch wide on a white field; safety instruction signs are white with a green upper panel; directional signs are white with a black panel and white symbol. At points of hazard, construction areas carry legible traffic control signs and are guarded by traffic control devices, and every traffic control device protecting construction workers follows MUTCD Part 6. Accident prevention tags are a temporary warning of a hazard that exists now, such as a defective tool or piece of equipment, never a substitute for signs, and follow either ANSI Z35.2-1968 or ANSI Z535.5-2011. The employer must also comply with the additional rules in those ANSI standards.
