Subpart G: Occupational Health and Environmental Control – OSHA General Industry Standards (29 CFR Part 1910)

OSHA General Industry Standards (29 CFR Part 1910) 1910.97: 1910.97 Nonionizing radiation

Applies to radio frequency electromagnetic radiation, including microwave frequencies, from radio stations, radar equipment and other sources used for communication, radio navigation and industrial and scientific purposes. It does not apply to deliberate exposure of patients by or under the direction of practitioners of the healing arts. Radiation protection guide: for normal environmental conditions and incident energy from 10 MHz to 100 GHz, the guide is a power density of 10 mW/cm2 averaged over any possible 0.1-hour period, equivalent to an energy density of 1 mW-hr/cm2 during any 0.1-hour period, whether the radiation is continuous or intermittent. The text frames the guide as a level that should not be exceeded without careful consideration of the reasons for doing so, and it applies to both whole body and partial body irradiation, because parts of the body such as the eyes and testicles may be harmed by levels significantly above the guide. Warning symbol: radio frequency radiation hazard warnings use the prescribed symbol of a red isosceles triangle above an inverted black isosceles triangle, separated and outlined by an aluminum-colored border, with the words "Warning, Radio-Frequency Radiation Hazard" in the upper triangle (Figure G-11). Color specification follows ANSI Z53.1-1967 or ANSI Z535.1-2006(R2011), incorporated by reference; lettering and border are aluminum colored. Any additional warning information or precautionary instructions are optional and, if included, go in the lower triangle. Paragraph (b), formerly ionizing radiation, is reserved.
