New Zealand Information Security Manual (NZISM) 11.7.30.C.03: 11.7.30.C.03 Network design elements for isolating access card systems

Agencies should consider these design elements for access card systems: (1) a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) isolating the card systems from the wider organisational network and from Internet Protocol (IP) connections judged high-risk; (2) links between the Internet and card system segments, which should be secured or removed; (3) vulnerable dial-up modem links, likewise secured or removed; (4) vulnerable wireless radio links and network access points, likewise secured or removed; and (5) monitoring of network activity to spot unusual or anomalous access, plus intrusion detection.
