When a partial loss is settled on a written estimate the insurer prepared or commissioned, the insured gets a copy; the estimate must be reasonable, consistent with the policy and sufficient for workmanlike repairs. If the insured's own written estimate shows necessary repairs will cost more, the insurer must pay the difference or promptly name at least one shop that will do the work for the insurer's figure, and where it names only one or two shops it must assure workmanlike repair; all such communications are documented. Reductions for betterment or depreciation must be itemised, specified in dollars, appropriate and supported in the file. Where the insurer chooses to repair and names the shop, it must have the vehicle restored to its pre-loss condition within a reasonable time at no cost to the claimant beyond what the policy states.
