Constructive challenge is a way of bringing a wider spread of viewpoints, risks, opportunities and interests to bear on a decision or a strategy. It works mainly by giving people a flexible structure and governance arrangements under which more questions can be asked and more voices heard in any decision-making or planning process, whether formal or casual, so that where necessary challenge can be more robust and views and information that would otherwise be missed or overruled come to light; it also builds mutual understanding, helps ideas and information flow inside and outside the organisation, strengthens trust and empowers relationships. In a new and complicated field like ESG the organisation treats it as a basic practice of leadership and governance and embeds it in its culture at every level, which takes confident leaders and managers to create a setting in which people feel safe, confident and equipped to contribute and to question how things are done, lifting ESG above box-ticking. The IWA provides sets of challenge questions for each pillar, to be refined with experience and backed by training where needed.
