International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) established by the IFRS Foundation Trustees on 3 November 2021 at COP26 Glasgow as the independent standard-setting body to develop a comprehensive global baseline of sustainability disclosure standards. ISSB operates alongside and complementarily with the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) under the IFRS Foundation. Inaugural Chair: Emmanuel Faber (2022-) + Vice-Chair: Sue Lloyd. (1) Foundational Standards Issued June 2023: IFRS S1 General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-related Financial Information + IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures. Effective for annual reporting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2024. Transition reliefs available for first-year reporters. (2) Underpinning Framework: ISSB builds upon and consolidates pre-existing frameworks - Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD - established 2015 by FSB Financial Stability Board) + Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Standards (industry-specific, acquired by IFRS Foundation 2022) + Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB - consolidated into IFRS Foundation 2022) + Integrated Reporting Framework (International Integrated Reporting Council IIRC consolidated 2022). FSB confirmed dissolution of TCFD in October 2024 with ISSB taking over climate disclosure standard-setting responsibilities. (3) Architecture: 4-Pillar TCFD-aligned framework (Governance + Strategy + Risk Management + Metrics and Targets) applied across all sustainability topics in IFRS S1 + applied specifically to climate in IFRS S2.
