Analysis evaluates ESI for content and context to identify facts, relationships, key patterns, topics, people and discussions that improve understanding of the corpus. Its objective is to apply tools and methods that yield information serving the goals of each other element (identification, preservation, collection, processing, review and production), which is why part 1 draws it as the outer ring around the others: it can be run with any of them, for example to find further sources during identification or to confirm a collection was adequate before skipping processing and review in a small matter; the right tool depends on the element supported and the question asked.
