Top management commitment is needed for both systems: ISO/IEC 20000-1 requires top management to determine what value means for the organisation and for its customers, and the value of the ISMS also needs to be understood, defined with regard to interested parties, which both standards use in a similar sense (staff, shareholders, customers, sometimes regulators or the public). Both standards (5.1) require top management to promote continual improvement and (5.2) a policy committing to it, in ISO/IEC 20000-1 covering the services too, not only the SMS, and both (10.2) require the organisation to improve its management system continually. ISO/IEC 20000-1 (10.2) adds evaluation criteria for improvement opportunities aligned to service management objectives and requires improvements to be managed, measured and reported, which the ISMS can usefully adopt.
