To prove that the network stays performant when its inputs carry noise, a stability property is expressed: the degree to which the output stays unchanged while the inputs vary over a stated domain. It may be posed as a closed question (is the variation under a threshold) or an open one (what is the largest stable domain). Stability properties should be used on domains whose expected behaviour has some regularity and are not meaningful for a chaotic system and should be avoided there, although they can still rank competing networks there.
