The assessment's roles are set out. (a) The sponsor appoints a lead assessor, who answers for the assessment's conformance, and confirms that person is competent to do it; makes enough other people available to make up the team; and gives the team access to every resource it needs. (b) The lead assessor confirms the sponsor's commitment; learns and records what the sponsor wants from the assessment; checks that the approach follows this part and that the declared scope matches what is actually assessed; makes sure participants are told the purpose, scope and approach; makes sure every team member has the knowledge and skills the role needs, access to documented guidance on the assessment activities, and competence with the chosen tools; confirms that the sponsor has received the deliverables; and at the end checks and records how far the assessment conformed to this part. Assessors' competence is judged on what they have learned through education and training, their skill and experience in assessing processes, and their experience of the domain; a body of knowledge or registration with a competence recognition scheme can show it, and ISO/IEC TS 33030:2017 supplies both a body of knowledge and ways to validate education, training and experience.
