ISO 8000 - Data Quality 1:5: 5 Principles of information and data quality

What does 1:5 require?

Six principles sit under the whole series. Data are information put into a formal shape that can be reinterpreted, so that it can be communicated, interpreted or processed. When stakeholders agree the level of quality the data must have, the right people can take the right decisions when they need to (a sound decision is itself the proof that the data were fit for its purpose; the agreement has to include everyone who takes part in, or is affected by, the decision). Good data quality management rests on the concepts and principles of ISO 9000. The quality of data depends on characteristics that belong to the data themselves, such as the character set used, the length of an item or the set of values a column may take, and not on properties of the whole system around them such as the confidentiality, integrity and availability that ISO/IEC 27001 deals with. Digital data are worth more to an organization when computers can process them. And data keep and deliver their worth as an asset only by continuing, co-ordinated effort across the organization, funded in proportion to the value the data bring, since everyone in it affects that quality and value.
